De show is begonnen/The show has begun

Gisteren (vrijdag 5 augustus) heeft de eerste voorstelling plaatsgevonden van de 2011 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Een uitzinnig reagerend publiek verwelkomde de deelnemers. In een lange colonne van bussen (40 stuks) werden de deelnemers vanuit de verschillende accommodaties twee uur voor de voorstelling naar het zwaar beveiligde taptoe terrein gereden. Nadat alle bussen op het kasteelterrein waren aangekomen mochten we uitstappen. Iedere band of groep ging naar hun rustplek, de Massed Pipes and Drums gingen naar het kasteel. Daar werden de tunes doorgespeeld en door Captain Steven Small en de senior Pipe Major Gordon Brown doorgenomen. Brian Alexander, de senior Drum Major in de British Army ontfermde zich over de drumsectie. Het was erg indrukwekkend om de ruim 200 man sterke Massed Pipes and Drums te horen spelen terwijl je uitkeek over een prachtig Edinburgh. De openingsavond werd bijgewoond door vele genodigden waaronder de Commanding Officer General. Toen de Massed Pipes and Drums over de drawbridge kwam steeg een enorm gejuich op van de 8500 aanwezige toeschouwers.

Na ons optreden met onder meer de tune Steamtrain to Malaig (waar men vanuit de geluidsboxen de fluit van stoomtrein laat horen) vindt er altijd een briefing plaats met alle Drums- en Pipe Majors met Capt. Steven Small over het optreden. Daarna keren wij terug naar de gebouwen om te rusten totdat de finale begint.

De finale is heel bijzonder omdat er eigenlijk maar 1 tune wordt gespeeld, namelijk “How to train your dragon”; muziek uit een kinderserie. Tijdens deze tune komen dan de verschillende groepen op.

De Massed Pipes and Drums komen dan in het donker op. Als ze gaan spelen worden ze ineens in het spotlight gezet, dit onder groot applaus van de bezoekers.

Finale 2011 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Gisterenavond waren Theo, George en René uitgenodigd bij de Royal Scots Dragoon Guards voor een gezellige avond. Direct na de show hebben we ons omgekleed op het kasteel en hebben onze uniformen opgeslagen in de barakken van de Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. Toen we naar hun pub gingen werden we verwelkomd met het lied: "Dat kleine cafe aan de haven" van Vader Abraham. Daarna werd er volop muziek gemaakt en gezongen tot in de kleine uurtjes. Een van de pipers speelde op de small pipe, terwijl twee anderen op de accordeon, gitaar en Irish flute speelden. Het was onvoorstelbaar wat de piper voor kunsten vertoonde op de small pipes! Bedankt guys het was geweldig!

Yesterday, August 5th, the first show of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo took place. A frenzied crowd welcomed the participants. In a long column of busses (40) the participants were driven the heavily guarded Tattoo area, two hours before the show. After all busses arrived at the Castle grounds, we were allowed to get out.

Each band our group went to their resting-place, the Massed Pipes & Drums went to the castle. There the tunes were played again and went through by Captain Steven Small and the senior Pipe Major Gordon Brown. Brian Alexander, the senior Drum Major took care to the drum section. It was very impressive to hear the Massed Pipes & Drums play while you were looking over beautiful Edinburgh. The opening evening was attended by many guest among which the Commanding Officer General. When the Massed Pipes & Drums crossed the drawbridge an enormous cheer went up by the 8500 present spectators.

After our performance with amongst others the tune “Steamtrain to Malaig” (the sound of the whistle of a steam train is heard through speakers) there is always a briefing with all Drum and Pipe Majors and Captain Steven Small about the performance. After that we go back to the building to take a rest until the finale begins.

The finale is very special, because only one tune is played: “How to train your Dragon”; music from a children's series. During this tune the several participating groups come on stage. The Massed Pipes and Drums come on stage in the dark. When they start to play the spotlight is turned on, making the audience give us an enormous applause.

Yesterday evening Theo, George and René were invited by Royal Scots Dragoon Guards for a sociable evening. Straight after the show we changed at the castle and we stored our uniforms in the barracks of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. When we went to their pub we were welcomed with the Dutch tune: "Dat kleine cafe aan de haven" (or “Die kleine Kneipe”). After that there was loads of music and singing until very late. One of the Pipes plaid on the small pips, while two others played the accordion, guitar and Irish flute. It was amazing what the Pipes could do with his small pipes! Thanks again Josh, David, Andy, and all the rest of the RSDG, we had a great time!
